Variety is the very spice of life, that gives it all its flavor.
If variety is the spice of life, why are we afraid of change?
An outward-bound ship is one which moves away from port or leaves home; headed for a predetermined destination. Whenever we leave our homeland, we leave the place of origin with a goal or purpose in mind and a map in hand. And so it is with love, as affection for anything or anyone usually occurs within a sacred chamber of our heart. Home base is where we feel safe, accepted, and unconditionally loved; however, that’s not always the case. Sometimes it ends up being a place where we are uncomfortably comfortable, regardless of the setting, whether at home, work, or play. It goes without saying, when leaving any point of origin (our comfort zone), without a plan, we leave life and love to chance. Who wants to do that?
Merely leaving life to chance may get you closer to where you’d prefer not to be. The key is to have an idea, a plan of action. I would rather create my own storyline. To be specific, choosing the people I adore, places I love, and the things that bring peace, joy, and contentment. In this post, we will focus namely on the heart. The heart to heart we have with ourselves and perhaps the one we have with others. So what floats your boat? In other words, what makes you happy? Truly… happy?
The secret of happiness is variety, but the secret of variety, like the secret of all spices, is knowing when to use it.
AFRAID TO LEAVE THE COMFORT ZONE?
Moving from the comfort zone can be a difficult undertaking but necessary if you want to live the life you are gifted to live. It’s important to note, leaving any aspect to chance by hoping, dreaming, and wishing will not suffice or change circumstances. However, when we tap into those heart whispers, we are called to look in another direction. These intuitive moments pave the way to something better, which can lead to wish fulfillment. Intuition plays a positive role as it invites us to take action. Action sets us on a journey, and the journey leads to new adventures. And with every adventure we have a new sense of purpose. With courage, determination, and passion, we attempt to achieve a better life.
The key is variety. It’s essential for us to seek and search for something we have never seen or done before, for variety is the spice of life. The spice of life is not a life we merely enjoy but a life we relish as it’s meaningful and worth living. When we take the time to indulge in something new, in something we appreciate, whether crafting, reading, writing, drawing, painting, dancing, or gardening, we boost creativity. The time outdoors renews our vitality by increasing our sense of well-being. The simple things like making time for socializing, sharing meals, stories, laughter, or a heart to heart, comforts the soul.
WHEN WE VENTURE OFF THE BEATEN PATH WE DISCOVER VARIETY IS THE SPICE OF LIFE
There’s so much to do and so little time to touch on everything we love. For example, when was the last time you took a trip, somewhere you’ve never been to before? What about venturing off the beaten path by exploring a scenic route? Why not sign up for a creative class? Dance lessons? Learn how to play an instrument. Go to the beach. Have a picnic. Listen to music. Sing. Meet new people. Try new recipes or create your own. What about heading off to a nightclub or lounge and listen to a band you’ve never seen before? Check out an art gallery, a museum, or take in a ballet.
The journey only begins when we not only plan our next step but take those necessary steps. Real life begins when we take a chance on something different, something new. To leave the misconstrued comfort zone and go for what we love. The things, people, places, and events we enjoy the most should be prioritized and scheduled. What if you don’t feel like doing anything? Then don’t. Spend a night at home, order a pizza, watch a movie, and just chill. There’s so much to do, or not… and we barely skimmed the surface.
My philosophy? Simplicity plus variety.
HEART TO HEART
What I’m trying to get at is this: we spend too much time fretting over what hasn’t happened. Depressed about what hadn’t worked out. Annoyed by what our negative thoughts relay and caught up in the negative input from others, only to end up missing the boat. By failing to detect the simple beauty of life we fail to notice the gifts, we fail to understand that variety is the spice of life. It’s the day-to-day choices we make and the things, people, places, and events that matter. Grateful for the simple pleasures, thankful for the freedom we have to create whatever our heart desires.
